For Chiao, whose dual citizenship complicates the very notion of allegiance, patriotism is both a source of tension and a key to collective achievement. He recalls an encounter at a border crossing, where his two passports drew the officer's suspicion, who questioned his loyalty. This moment crystallized his internal struggle, as he navigated between two identities without fully belonging to either. The highest form of belonging, he suggests, fuses individual aspiration with the momentum of the many, distilling myriad efforts into a singular, resonant force.
