Artwork Description:
In the Portrait of Sportsman, Nicholaas Chiao depicted a man from an Arabian tale rather than from a live person. Cultural differences between South and North have been many times fuelling armed conflicts. Cultural differences between the Eastern and Western World are also often fuel wars. From the artist's standpoint, only sport should be permitted to clear some differences, which in his opinion, could not be even discussed: because each of the world areas makes life safe and rightful adapted to the territory and its traditions, and the same adaptation and traditions, that works in the South simply will not work in Northern areas because of different climate, nature and human relations. The sport could permit someone to have near military victories by executing pure balance and strength in the Sports Arenas, without trying to prove by brutal military force something that cannot be proven by armed aggression.
